Common signs include constantly dismissing your achievements as "luck," feeling terrified of being "exposed" as a fraud, overworking to the point of burnout to "prove" your worth, and finding it difficult to accept praise. But, my experience coaching people is that they know the feeling, even if they don't know the words for it.

It's often a combination of personality traits (like perfectionism) and new situations. Starting a new, high-stakes role like COO, being in a high-achieving environment, or being part of an underrepresented group can all trigger these feelings.

3. Is imposter syndrome a mental health condition?

That's an important question. Technically, imposter syndrome is not recognized as an official mental health disorder in diagnostic manuals like the DSM-5. It's considered a psychological pattern—a set of feelings and beliefs that a vast majority of successful people experience at some point.

However, that does not mean its effects aren't real and significant. The feelings of chronic self-doubt, anxiety, and the persistent fear of being "found out" can be incredibly draining.

For leaders with ADHD, these feelings are often amplified. The experience of Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD)—an intense emotional pain connected to perceived failure or rejection—can turn a minor mistake into what feels like catastrophic proof that you are a fraud. This can create a constant state of high-alert anxiety.

Because of this, while imposter syndrome itself isn't a disorder, it can be a significant contributor to, and often co-exists with, serious mental health concerns like anxiety, depression, and leadership burnout. It's crucial to address these feelings with a qualified coach or therapist before they take a deeper toll on your well-being.

4. How do I talk to my CEO about imposter Syndrome feelings?

You don't necessarily have to say, "I feel like an impostor." Instead, you can frame it constructively. Try saying, "As I grow in this role, I want to make sure I'm focusing on the right things. Could we get your perspective on where you see me adding the most value?"

For many high-achievers, not entirely - and that's okay. It is helpful to remember that these feelings often reappear whenever you take on a new, bigger challenge. The goal is not to eliminate it forever, but to get better at recognizing it and managing it so that it no longer controls your actions or limits your potential.
